The tongue is the central support for a properly balanced craniofacial complex. The tongue should rest fully in the palate and properly engage the full palate in a coordinated swallow. This balance allows not only for proper growth and development of the lower half of the face and the airway, but also for stability of the TMJ and airway to reduce dysfunction and pain in the jaws, TMJ, neck, and shoulder muscles.
The REMplenish straw is an invaluable tool for improved tongue strength and function. Without an understanding of proper mechanics, however, it can end in frustration and discontinued use. The video clip above is a great demonstration of proper use and mechanics- PLEASE watch and understand it in coordination with your implementation of the straw.
- Rest lips and teeth lightly on the straw, but DO NOT BITE at all
- The tip of the tongue stays engaged with the straw at all times
- The back of the tongue is the only thing that should move: down to draw in water, then up to palate/nozzle to swallow., repeat.
- No facial muscles should activate during a proper swallow.
My recommendation is Level 2 for most adults and older kids. I recommend Level 1 for kids under 10. The rare times I would recommend that an adult start with Level 1 would be an exceptionally weak tongue.
